Collaborating with creative agencies definitely piqued my interest . . .

Hello, I’m Eve, an in-house creative for a charity in Leith, Edinburgh. I’m Linlithgow-based mostly, and originally a Falkirk Bairn.

EVE SMITH, SCOTLAND, UK

GRAPHIC DESIGN LEVEL 2 COURSE

Eve at St James Quarter

After graduating with a degree in Environmental Geoscience, I quickly realised the lab environment wasn’t the right fit for me. I became more curious about how to communicate science in a way that people could really connect with. That curiosity eventually led me into the world of communications and marketing, though mostly for charities, not scientists!

Over the last ten years, I’ve built my career in that space, but the part I always enjoyed most was working alongside creative agencies and graphic designers. That’s when I started experimenting with Adobe Illustrator and InDesign, mostly teaching myself along the way. I had a gut feeling I might have an eye for design,  just maybe. Looking back, I think my science background helped sharpen my problem-solving skills, which turns out is a huge part of design thinking too.

What are your career goals, and how are you hoping to achieve these?

There’s a part of me that would love to step into a leadership role, heading up creative campaigns for a major charity. It would feel amazing to use creativity as a force for positive change. But there’s also another part of me that dreams of something smaller — running my own studio, creating beautiful illustrations, designing products, and living that small business life. For now, I’m enjoying the work I do, while carving out time for my own creative projects on the side.

What first sparked your interest in graphic design?

Working closely with design teams definitely got the ball rolling. I started to see graphic design as more than just visuals — it was problem-solving in action. Even outside of work, I’ve always admired well-thought-out design. I’m especially fascinated by wayfinding systems — signage that helps people navigate spaces. When it’s done well, no one notices it. But when it goes wrong, it creates chaos. I love that design has the power to quietly guide or completely confuse. It’s functional, not just decorative, and that’s what makes it so powerful.

Why did you choose to study this course, and how did you find us?

Being self-taught, I often felt like I was on the outside of the design world looking in. I understood the ideas, but I didn’t always know the right terminology or how things were ‘supposed’ to be done. That’s when I started looking for a structured course that could give me a proper grounding.

After some digging (thanks, Google!), I found the Creative Design School. The student reviews were fantastic — full of real experiences and stories that made me feel like this was a school that genuinely cares. It felt approachable and supportive, which was exactly what I was looking for.
